I headed out after dark with the quad-band filter and hot mirror to see what kind of images I could capture.
The results were interesting, with landscapes taking on unusual green and red tones that gave familiar scenes an alien look.
Not everything worked perfectly, though. Bright lights produced some distracting reflections and flares. I’m not convinced there’s an easy fix—there’s simply a lot of glass in the optical path, and the specialized spectral bands probably don’t help.
For now, I’m still experimenting and trying to figure out whether the reflections are an unavoidable trade-off or something that can be improved.
One approach could be to expose a little less, enable Active D-Lighting, and compensate with a higher ISO setting. It might also be worth testing a different hot mirror, I may also try a polarizer, although I’m not convinced it will have much effect…
