I got a Sigma SD1 again. Those who’ve followed this blog longer know: for digital Aerochrome it’s still the only camera that delivers the full palette — including the color shifts — straight out of camera with the TB triple bandpass filter. No channel swapping. The colors happen in-camera thanks to its special Foveon sensor.
Some readers told me they didn’t get the same results. In most cases, it came down to CWB. Here’s my way.
Yes, I managed a CWB with the TB plus the Lee Middle Rose, whose role is to reduce the green channel. Shot from sunlit water, 1/20s at f/5. It worked. But it’s unnecessary.
What matters is getting a CWB with the TB alone.
Mount only the TB. Always use FovBlue as preset. Start with neutral surfaces in direct sunlight. If that fails, try blue sky near the sun. With strong light it usually locks in after a few attempts.
Even if it’s slightly off: in Sigma Photo Pro you can fine-tune white balance later under the “manual” setting. The important thing is to establish a working TB baseline in-camera.
Keep it simple. Get the TB CWB right. SPP does the rest.
But: It may matter which lens you use! I can’t really judge that, since I only have the standard 18–50mm.
