Midday Along the Aare

A place is not always “good”, whether for lingering or for photographing. Different factors shape it, and they are never quite the same. Above all, the weather, but also time of day, the season, temperature—everything interacts, constantly changing the character of a place. Sometimes it can feel harsh or uninspiring. And sometimes, everything comes together.

Like today at midday.

I took a stroll along the Aare behind the Regiebrücke in Thun. It felt like a short holiday.

The gentle rushing of the river, the sun on my face, and that crisp, clean air—everything carried a sense of freshness, as if last night’s snowfall had quietly washed the world.

In a few weeks, the river will rise again and reclaim this narrow strip of land. But for now, it lies exposed, scattered with shells, driftwood, and overgrown rocks.

There was an almost Mediterranean charm to it, and I liked being in this warm, sheltered place—while the slopes and mountains in the background were still completely white, caught in clouds from last night’s winter storm.

There’s something special about this in-between time, when winter hasn’t quite let go, yet spring is already whispering its arrival.

If the Aare is low, this is one of the most beautiful places for me to be.
